The Impact Of Partial Discharge On Switchgear

1.Gas Insulated Switchgear

Cubicle Type Gas Insulated Switchgear (C-GIS) is a complete set of electrical equipment derived from the combination of GIS (gas insulated metal-enclosed switchgear) technology and conventional switchgear technology, commonly known as a gas-filled cabinet.

2.Air-insulated ring main unit (RMU).

This type of unit uses air as the primary insulation. Its main switch is equipped with a gas-generating, compressed air, or vacuum load switch. It is available in both negative-side and positive-side mounting options, and the operating mechanism is front-mounted. This type of unit is relatively large, with a width of 800mm for 12kV and 1700mm for 40.5kV. If a vacuum load switch is used as the main switch, since its empty interrupter can only interrupt, not isolate, an isolating switch must be added before the load switch during design to complete the isolation function.

 

3. Air and SF₆ Gas Hybrid Insulated Ring Main Unit

This type of ring main unit typically uses an SF₆ load switch as the main switch. It is enclosed in a fully sealed epoxy resin or stainless steel housing and filled with low-pressure SF₆ gas as the insulating medium (SF₆ gas also serves as the arc-extinguishing medium).

 

4. Solid-Insulated Ring Main Unit

This type of ring main unit completely eliminates the use of pressure vessels. The internal insulation and arc extinguishing of the switch body are achieved through a vacuum medium, while the outer insulation tubes are used to solidify the switch components. Enclosed busbars connect the various circuits. The insulation tubes utilize solid-sealed pole technology, organically integrating the vacuum interrupter, main conductive circuit, and insulation support into a single unit, achieving a fully insulated, fully sealed, and maintenance-free structure. The insulation tubes are made of epoxy resin, and the busbars are encapsulated with silicone rubber. This structure effectively mitigates corrosion of the power supply unit by isolating it from air, moisture, dust, and hot and cold air sources.

5. Gas-insulated Ring Main Unit

This type of ring main unit (RMU) encloses all high-voltage live conductors (such as three-position load switches and connecting busbars) in a stainless steel casing filled with low-pressure SF₆ gas, using SF₆ gas as both an insulating and arc-extinguishing medium. Due to its stainless steel casing, the gas-insulated RMU not only offers excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and heat dissipation, but also provides reliable grounding, ensuring maximum personal safety.
