Steps for installing an RMU Grounding Switch
Inspect parts. Ensure all components for the grounding switch, such as the operating mechanism, switch, and associated hardware, are correct and undamaged.
Clean surfaces. Before assembly, clean all bushings and contact holes thoroughly.
Prepare grounding wire. If installing a new unit or external ground, strip the insulation from the end of the grounding wire and use a crimping tool to attach a grounding lug. Verify the lug is securely attached.
Mount the switch. Install the internal grounding switch mechanism into its designated position within the RMU. The precise location will depend on the RMU's internal design, which may place the switch on the load side of the circuit breaker.
Assemble internal components. Attach the grounding switch's moving contact knife to the mechanism. This is part of the sealed switch room in gas-insulated RMUs.
Connect to busbars. Ensure the internal contacts are properly aligned with the busbars. In some modular RMU designs, busbar sections may need to be connected with specific bolts.
Locate grounding point. Identify the RMU's chassis grounding pad, marked with the international earth ground symbol.
Attach grounding wire. Secure the pre-assembled grounding lug to the chassis grounding pad using M4 screws or other specified hardware. Tighten the screws to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Connect to facility ground. Connect the other end of the grounding wire to a reliable earth ground point. This is a critical step for ensuring an effective ground for the switch.
Manual operation. Before closing the cabinet, use the operating handle to manually engage and disengage the grounding switch.
Indicator check. Verify that the position indicators for the grounding switch change correctly, and that you can visually confirm the switch position through any provided observation windows.
Safety interlock check. Confirm that the safety interlocks are functioning. For example, check that the ground switch cannot be closed if the main load break switch is also closed.
Secure the unit. Close and secure the RMU's cable access door and any other access panels.
Final tests. After installation is complete, conduct detailed commissioning and testing, including contact resistance, to ensure all functions operate correctly.
Commissioning. Once all tests are passed and the RMU is ready, you can proceed with the commissioning process to return the unit to service.
